Why GMI Solutions Is the Right Partner for Your Healthcare & Surgical Cart Program

Manufacturing What Matters — Precision. Reliability. Partnership.

260618 Medical surgical cart Version 3 HighRes OK to USE

When it comes to healthcare and surgical cart manufacturing, the stakes couldn't be higher. Every cart that leaves our facility is someone's lifeline — a spine surgery system, a robotic navigation platform, or a mobile ultrasound unit that a care team depends on every single day. At GMI Solutions, we don't just manufacture carts.

We manufacture what matters.

Built on Decades of Medical Cart Expertise

GMI's journey into medical carts is a culmination of 15 years of work on cart-based products. About 15 years ago, we saw the industry start to transition from stable fixed systems in a surgical theater into mobile cart-based solutions. For us, it was a natural progression — we already had the foundation of all the insides of the carts, because the historical surgical theater components — embedded PCs, control cabinets — were being transitioned into those carts. We grew with the industry, which gave us a wealth of tribal knowledge when it came to not only manufacturing carts, but designing them. With over 40 years of medical device contract manufacturing experience, our expertise spans imaging systems, treatment systems, patient monitoring, robotic surgical equipment, and other critical care technologies.

Specialized in High-Mix, Low-to-Medium Volume Production - Perfect for Carts

We've been building medical surgical carts for over 20 years. Through that, there have been a lot of lessons learned — and we document that and create processes to reflect all those lessons learned, applying them to every new project. One of the things we often talk about is that we're good at high-mix, low volume. With surgical carts, you're talking about hundreds when you're at max run rate, and that presents its own challenges — especially when everyone has to work the same way, and your FDA files are relying on that from a procurement perspective. GMI specializes in high-mix, low-to-medium volume manufacturing. Our infrastructure is optimized for flexibility and responsiveness rather than high-volume commodity production.

Whether you're launching a first-of-kind robotic surgery platform or scaling an established surgical navigation cart, GMI's ecosystem was built precisely for you.

GMI supplies cart solutions to some of the world's best know brands.

NPI-CART-REVIEW

Engineering Intelligence — From Prototype to Production

Modern surgical carts may support shoulder surgery, hip surgery, and spinal surgery — meaning one cart may be housing 2 or 3 different use modes in one assembly. That's where GMI provides a lot of value. When you look at the thermals and the organization of compute solutions within a cart, GMI has a long history in that — we understand it, and we can look at the structure of a cart and make recommendations or even do some design work for you regarding how the electronics should work within that cart.

Another thing that really helps, especially if you're bringing a cart or a new mobile solution (or new version) to market in healthcare, is to have us take a look at the industrial design side of things. Between the alpha and beta stages, we can help bring a lot of things to light, because of our decades of experience doing mobile solutions. GMI evaluates your design from both a manufacturability perspective and a pricing perspective. We can help guide design decisions that are going to give you a more repeatable product at the best price possible.

Our dedicated NPI team will work with you to manage every detail of transferring your cart assembly into full production in a controlled, methodical manner.

A Best-in-Class Supply Chain for Medical Carts

GMI has one of the best-in-class supply chains when it comes to medical carts. Through our experience across early cart programs, we've evolved our sourcing relationships and now understand that different form factors need different casters, different stabilizer assemblies, and different levels of engineering precision — from economical casters all the way to solutions that give the surgeon confidence that their product is not going to move during a surgical procedure.

GMI proactively identifies and manages single-source risks as part of our supply chain strategy. During the NPI phase, our sourcing team systematically identifies single-source exposures and works with the OEM to build mitigation strategies that may include alternate source qualification, safety stock programs, or long-term supply agreements.

Our dual-hemisphere presence across the US and China provides geographic diversification, giving your program resilience against regional supply disruptions.

cart_create_rampPackaging & Logistics: Covered.

When you invest millions of dollars in a cutting-edge surgical platform, how it arrives at its destination matters as much as the quality when it leaves manufacturing. At GMI, packaging is not an afterthought — it's an engineered part of the product experience. GMI offers custom packaging including sustainable, reusable, and recyclable options, along with full logistic services support. For surgical cart systems, that means purpose-built wood crate solutions designed to protect your investment, impress your end users, and streamline installation from the moment the shipment arrives on site.

Purpose-Built Wood Crates for High-Value Critical Systems

Our wood crates are purpose-engineered for complex, heavy cart systems — not just cosmetically, but functionally. The crate design affords opportunities for access panels and custom features — for example, one side of the crate can drop down and become a ramp so that one person can wheel a cart off, versus having a two-man or four-man lift, or a winch lift. That kind of thoughtful design makes installation faster, safer, and far less burdensome for your field teams and hospital customers.

Reusable Crates — Smart Economics, Smaller Footprint

GMI's reusable wood crate program delivers value beyond the first delivery. Reusable packaging has additional benefits — there's a smaller overall footprint because you are reusing that packaging. Even though it may seem counterintuitive to ship it back, it becomes worthwhile — it's a big cost-saving tool. For large-scale surgical suite deployments, the logistics of disposable packaging can become an operational headache for hospitals. In the case of robotic surgical suite solutions, we're sending nine, twelve, or fifteen crates to a site. The end user benefits from being able to return-ship those crates — they don't have to worry about how to dispose of them, and they don't have to fill a dumpster with scrap wood. And we don't have to chop down another tree, make another crate, and do the whole thing again — so that reusability is an important part of what we do.

Proven at Scale — Real Surgical Cart Programs

GMI's Packaging Expertise Includes:

  • Custom wood crate design — engineered specifically for your cart form factor, weight, and center of gravity
  • Reusable crate programs — designed for return shipment and repeated use, driving cost savings and sustainability
  • Integrated access features — ramp-down panels, access doors, and interior staging for single-person unloading
  • Branding opportunities — crate exteriors can carry your OEM branding for a premium customer experience
  • Validated packaging processes — packaging design and validation managed as part of GMI's ISO 13485 quality system
  • Full logistics support — from outbound shipping coordination to return crate logistics management.

Speed to Market — Without Sacrificing Quality

One of the first reasons OEMs come to us is our speed to market. We're a very nimble organization, and we've proven time and time again that we can hit commercial launch dates. That's the priority for OEMs — get this technology out into the market so they can capture as much of the market as possible. And on the back end, GMI has done a great job of committing to gaining efficiencies and driving improvements through DFM — not just launching a cart, but managing the full lifecycle of that cart.

GMI operates a formalized NPI (New Product Introduction) Launch Process structured in four clearly defined phases — Prospect, Quote, Prototype, and Production Transfer. Through parallel engineering activities, proactive facility readiness, and a dedicated production team, the transition from prototype to full production is a controlled, confident handoff leading to a smooth ramp-up to full production volume.

A Partnership That Goes the Distance

A big part of GMI's value is that we manage the complete product lifecycle — including all of the intricate electronics that are inside the unit. OEMs are not capital equipment companies; they're software companies. Their bread and butter is the software — what the system does. They don't want to manage the hardware. They're constantly looking for partners that can manage that portion of the build — someone truly turnkey, so they can focus on what makes their product great.

GMI becomes a true extension of your team.

We always begin with an in-person kickoff workshop that brings our Tiger team and your team together to establish a project plan, create synergies, and feel like one solidified team. There's no delineation between GMI and the medical OEM — and that drives a lot of success.
